Blog & Ping Traffic
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Question: Does pinging more websites increase your blog traffic?
Not really.A All pinging does is get other websites, search engines and directories to crawl your blog and add your content to their databases faster.A But pinging them won’t really put you in the top of their search or directory listings.
Unless ofcourse, you are the first one to break a story.A If you blog about current affairs, many of these websites and search engines that you ping will show your post at the top when people search for the hot news.
Here is the list of all the websites I ping (posted alphabetically):

If you use WordPress to blog, simply go to Options > Writing under your admin panel and update your ping list with the links above. It doesn’t hurt.A And if you are amongst the first few blogs that publishes a post about a new or unique phrase, you’ll generate a lot of traffic.

I can see that many pings taking a long time every time you make a new post on your blog.

Hi Jared,
Thanks for commenting.
You don’t have to manually ping so many links if you use WordPress. It is done automatically.
And, it doesn’t require a lot of resources to ping websites either. It won’t put an unbearable load on your servers.
So why not?
Posted 14 Jun 2007 #
People not using WordPress and without the option of automatic pinging should focus on just one site:
http://www.pingomatic.com
That one site will ping the most famous blog directories for you.

@Ankesh: I know it’s automatic, but pinging lots of servers can slow WordPress down every time you post something. This is especially true if one of those servers is overloaded or for some reason not responding quickly.

Thanks Jared for your helpful contribution.
I’ve always thought that if one of the pinged servers is overloaded, my blog will receive a time out error and will skip that ping on go to the next one on the list.
And I don’t publish more than a couple posts everyday. So never thought that overloading would be a problem. I’ve never noticed WordPress to act slow - even right after I’ve published a post…
But I’m no expert on pinging. Could you give us your opinion on whats the optimal number of links that should be pinged?
Maybe we could publish a follow up post on this blog with a list of links that you ping…

Thanks Jared; thanks Ankesh. Very thoughtful and reasoned exchange here.
Here is the link for pingomaticand I see that one can select exactly which services are to be pinged.
I’ll update my post as my understanding expands.

I tried pingomatic dot com. What kind of results can I expect? I have a question though… Which services shall I ping and which not…. How can I find that which services are applicable to my blog. In other words, where can I find the unique features of each service…..?
Do write to me.
Thanks.

Hi Jai,
There are no pinging services that have narrowed down to a particular niche. So you may want to ping all of them.
The results aren’t that great (atleast in my experience) unless you are one of the first blogs to talk about some hot and happening news.

Hi Ankesh,
Thank you for the reply.

Pinging may not help in search engine ranking but it does help in Alexa ranking even if only ever so slightly

Thanks for sharing that awesome list. I will try it on my blog as well
Couldn’t hurt to try, could it?
