Monetizing Your RSS Feeds
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Many bloggers just allow their blog post summaries to be shown in their blog RSS feeds. Their reason? If they show the entire blog post in their RSS feeds, people won’t come over to their blogs. And they won’t see the ads on the blogs that help them earn extra money.
But - if you don’t show your entire blog posts in your RSS feeds, you will start losing subscribers. Many people will unsubscribe from your RSS feeds!A So what to do? Simple:
Monetize your RSS Feeds.
Show your entire blog posts in the RSS feeds.A But monetize your RSS feeds too.
Google Adsense and ads from most other ad-networks won’t work with RSS feeds because they use javascript to show the ads. And RSS feed readers don’t support javascript. So the only way to monetize your blogs is by showing HTML or text ads.
Step 1: If you use WordPress for blogging, download the Feed Footer plugin.
Step 2: Find an affiliate program that allows you to use your own text and images to promote. Two networks that you can surf to find products to promote:
Step 3: Create your short text or banner ad for the product you want to promote. And add it to the footer field of the plugin. With Feed Footer plugin, 10 different footers that promote your affiliate products can be rotated. Which means: you can promote 10 different affiliate products from the bottom of all your blog posts in the RSS feeds!

I don’t really see the point in advertising in RSS feeds. New visitors are more likely to click on an ad than a long-time reader. Most long-time readers will subscribe to your RSS feed, whereas a new visitor isn’t because a large portion of new visitors come from search engines and are looking for something specific.

Good article, although I would have to agree with Jared. Only new users really click advertisements so monetizing a feed isn’t really worthwhile unless you have time.
Looking forward to reading more.

Awesome! Information I can put to use!

Thanks Jared and Leonid for talking about new visitors clicking on ads. My experience has been: with a few twists, you can make regular readers click on ads and buy too! May be I’ll make a new blog post about it though…

“If you liked this post, buy me a beer. (Suggested: $3 a beer or $7.5 for a pitcher)”
What kind of crazy beer are you drinking? My favorites are all variants of Leffe (Brun, Blonde, Radieuse), and where I live they cost less than $1 a bottle in the supermarket.
And if it’s because you drink it in a pub, maybe you’d better stop. In addition to its being expensive, in my experience people who drink beer by the pitcher in pubs have no class. Stick with drinking by the bottle at home.
Good luck.
David.

I’m looking for a plug-in like this not for monetizing my blog, but for encouraging people to click through to comment, but cannot find the link language to use - anyone have any suggestions?
Posted 07 Aug 2007 #
Dawn: Thanks for asking. Here is an idea with a slight twist. Instead of asking people to comment, ask them to “Read what others think of this post.” When they click to read other people’s comments, they will be more prone to commenting themselves.

Great Job! I installed the plugin, filled all 10 fields with text and HTML and tomorrow will test witj a new post.
I hope it will work well!
Thank you, Ankesh!

so what if people not subscribe to your RSS? i don’t think it is that important. People should visit the blog or website in the first place.

FeedFooter is awesome. This is on my top list of must-have plugins for Wordpress. If you don’t use it, what are you waiting for? Monetize your feed and do some narrowcasting via RSS feeds. Thanks for the great plugin!
